Let me show you how this works. I'm going to teach you how todraw a picture of asentence. We call a picture of a sentence adiagram.

    Here is a simple diagram:

We write the words from the sentence onto the diagram. We writethe noun onthe left line and the verb on the right line, likethis:

Now I want you to try. Diagram each of these sentences:

    (1) Wolves howl.

    Math Lesson 24b: Mixed Operations

    10 + 3 - 7

In the problem above, there is a + sign and a - sign. How do youwork a problem that is both +

and - ? The trick is to start at the LEFT and work to theRIGHT.

STEP 1: Add or subtract the first two numbers on the LEFT.

In this case you are adding 10 + 3.

STEP 2: Bring down the sign and the number that you didn't use,the sign and number on the

    RIGHT.

In this case you are bringing down - 7.

STEP 3: Now you have a new problem. Add or subtract the newproblem and write the answer

UNDER the new problem so that it looks like an upside-downtriangle.

    So, 10 + 3 - 7 = 6. That was pretty easy, wasn't it?

Reading Lesson 20 - The Mirror of Matsuyama (a)

Read and discuss the story with your teacher:

A long, long time ago there lived in a quiet spot a young manand his wife. They had

one child, a little daughter, whom they both loved with alltheir hearts. I cannottell you their names, for they have longsince been forgotten; but the name of theplace where they lived wasMatsuyama, in the Province of Echigo.

It happened once, while the little girl was still a baby, thatthe father was obligedto go to the great city, the capital ofJapan, upon some business. It was too far forthe mother and herlittle baby to go, so he set out alone, after bidding themgoodbyeand promising to bring them home some pretty present.

The mother had never been farther from home than the nextvillage, and she couldnot help being a little frightened at thethought of her husband taking such a longjourney; and yet she was alittle proud too, for he was the first man in all thatcountry-sidewho had been to the big town where the king and his great lordslived, and where there were so many beautiful and curious things tobe seen.

    33/80

At last the time came when she might expect her husband back, soshe dressedthe baby in its best clothes, and herself put on apretty blue dress which she knewher husband liked.

You may fancy how glad this good wife was to see him come homesafe and sound, and how the little girl clapped her hands, andlaughed with delight when she sawthe pretty toys her father hadbrought for her. He had much to tell of all thewonderful things hehad seen upon the journey, and in the town itself.

    "I have brought you a very pretty thing," said he to his wife;"it is called a mirror.Look and tell me what you see inside." Hegave to her a plain white wooden box, inwhich, when she had openedit, she found a round piece of metal. One side waswhite, likefrosted silver, and ornamented with raised figures of birds andflowers;

the other was bright as the clearest crystal. Into it the youngmother looked withdelight and astonishment, for, from its depthswas looking at her with parted lipsand bright eyes, a smiling happyface.

"What do you see?" again asked the husband, pleased at herastonishment and gladto show that he had learned something while hehad been away.

"I see a pretty woman looking at me, and she moves her lips asif she was speaking, and - dear me, how odd, she has on a blue dressjust like mine!"

"Why, you silly woman, it is your own face that you see!" saidthe husband, proud ofknowing something that his wife didn't know."That round piece of metal is called amirror. In the town everybodyhas one, although we have not seen them in thiscountry-placebefore."

The wife was charmed with her present, and for a few days couldnot look into themirror often enough; for you must remember that asthis was the first time shehad seen a mirror, so, of course, it wasthe first time she had ever seen thereflection of her own prettyface. But she considered such a wonderful thing far

too precious for everyday use, and soon shut it up in its boxagain and put it awaycarefully among her most valued treasures.

Years passed on, and the husband and wife still lived happily. The joy of their lifewas their little daughter, who grew up thevery image of her mother, and who wasso dutiful and affectionatethat everybody loved her. Mindful of her own little

passing vanity on finding herself so lovely, the mother kept themirror carefullyhidden away, fearing that the use of it might breeda spirit of pride in her littlegirl.

She never spoke of it, and as for the father he had forgottenall about it. So ithappened that the daughter grew up as simple asthe mother had been, and knewnothing of her own good looks, or ofthe mirror which would have reflected them.

But by-and-by a terrible misfortune happened to this happylittle family. The good, kind mother fell sick; and, although herdaughter waited upon her, day and night, with loving care, she gotworse and worse, until at last there was no doubt but thatshe mustdie.

When she found that she must so soon leave her husband andchild, the poorwoman felt very sorrowful, grieving for those shewas going to leave behind, andmost of all for her littledaughter.

She called the girl to her and said, "My darling child, you knowthat I am very sick;soon I must die and leave your dear father andyou alone. When I am gone, promiseme that you will look into thismirror every night and every morning; there you willsee me, andknow that I am still watching over you." With these words she tookthemirror from its hiding-place and gave it to her daughter. Thechild promised, withmany tears, and so the mother, seeming now calmand resigned, died a short timeafter.

Now this obedient and dutiful daughter never forgot her mother'slast request, but each morning and evening took the mirror from itshiding-place, and looked in itlong and earnestly. There she saw thebright and smiling vision of her lost mother. Not pale and sickly asin her last days, but the beautiful young mother of long ago.To herat night she told the story of the trials and difficulties of theday; to herin the morning she looked for sympathy and encouragementin whatever might be instore for her.

So day by day she lived as in her mother's sight, striving stillto please her as shehad done in her lifetime, and careful always toavoid whatever might pain or grieveher.

Her greatest joy was to be able to look in the mirror and say,"Mother, I have beento-day what you would have me to be."

Seeing her look into the mirror every night and morning withoutfail, and seem to

hold converse with it, her father at length asked her the reasonof her strangebehaviour. "Father," she said, "I look in the mirrorevery day to see my dearmother and to talk with her." Then she toldhim of her mother's dying wish, andhow she had never failed tofulfill it. Touched by so much simplicity, and suchfaithful, lovingobedience, the father shed tears of pity and affection. Nor couldhefind it in his heart to tell the child that the image she saw inthe mirror was butthe reflection of her own sweet face, becoming byconstant sympathy andassociation more and more like her deadmother's day by day.

Let's talk about another group of vertebrates -reptiles*.

Turtles, lizards, snakes, alligators, and crocodilesare allreptiles. Reptiles and amphibians may looklike the same kind ofanimal. If you saw a snakeand a frog, you might think they belongedto thesame group. But if you examined them moreclosely, you wouldfind they are different.

Amphibian skin is wet and a bit slimy. Reptile skinisn't slimyat all. It is dry and scaly and it canfeel quite rough.

Have you ever seen a snake skin with no snake init? Scales arepart of the outer layer of areptile's skin. It is made of deadcells (just likeour skin) and must be shed every now and then asthereptile grows. Scales keep a reptile fromlosing water. Reptilescannot breathe through

their skin as amphibians do; reptiles use onlytheir lungs.Reptiles are like amphibians in thatthey lay eggs, but reptile eggsare tough andleathery. The tough shell allows reptiles to laytheireggs on land. Thanks to tough, scaly skinand waterproof eggshells, reptiles can live inmany different places - in woods and desertsaswell as near water. Amphibians can't do that;they have to staynear water. But reptiles canroam around on land without dryingout.

Also, reptiles don't go through a metamorphosisas frogs andtoads do. Baby reptiles usually looklike small adults ready to goout in the worldalone.

Science Unit 3: VertebratesLesson 6: Birds

Let's talk about another group of vertebrates - birds.

Like fish, amphibians and reptiles, birds lay eggs. Their eggshave hard shells. Most (but not all) fish, amphibians and reptilesparents leave their eggs after theylay them. Birds do not. Birdsstay with their eggs. They sit or lay on them to keep

the baby growing inside the egg warm. After the baby chickhatches out of theegg, the parents feed it until it is big enoughto take care of itself.

Another difference between birds and fish, amphibians andreptiles is that birdsare warm blooded. The body temperature offish, amphibians and reptiles changes

  • 7/27/2019 3rd Grade Worksheets - Week 6 of 36

    47/80

depending on the temperature around them. Birds' temperaturesstay the same allthe time no matter what the weather is or wherethey live.

One of the things that help birds to stay warm is theirfeathers. There are soft,

fluffy underneath feathers called down. Here is a baby baldeagle covered indowny feathers.

As the baby eagle grows up, he will grow special contourfeathers that will lay ontop of his downy feathers. You can seethose contour feathers in the picture on

the right. The contour feathers will lie smooth on its body. They will help to keepthe bird warm and will also help it to flywhen it's old enough.

Of course, not all birds fly. Penguins don't fly. Neither doostriches or emus and afew other kinds of birds. But most birds dofly.

Do you know what a mammal is? -----

  • 7/27/2019 3rd Grade Worksheets - Week 6 of 36

    49/80

Let's talk about the group of vertebratescalled mammals*.

When you think of an animal it is likely to be amammal. Peopleare mammals. Cats and dogs

are mammals. So are farm animals such ascattle, goats, hogs, andhorses. Mammals alsoinclude such fascinating animals asporcupines, gorillas, giraffes, rhinoceroses and kangaroos.

Mammals are found to exist all over the worldin all differentclimates. Mammals such aschimpanzees and elephants dwell intropicalregions. Arctic foxes, polar bears and manyother mammalsmake their home near the

North Pole. Camels and coyotes live indeserts. Some mammals evenlive in the seasuch as dolphins, seals and whales. One groupofmammals, the bats, can fly.

These characteristics are common to all mammals:

    (1) Mammals nurse their babies. They feed them on the mother'smilk. Mammals

have to eat a lot of food to maintain their high bodytemperature.(2) Most mammals give their young more protection andtraining than do otheranimals.

    (3) Only mammals have hair. All mammals have hair at some timein their life, though in certain whales it is present only beforebirth.

    (4) Mammals have a larger, more well-developed brain than doother animals. Somemammals, such as chimpanzees, dolphins, andespecially human beings, are highlyintelligent.

    (5) Mammals are able to move around using limbs.

    (6) Last but not least, mammals are warm-blooded. Their bodytemperature remainsabout the same all the time, even though thetemperature of their surroundings maychange. Birds are alsowarm-blooded, but animal groups such as fish, birds, reptilesandamphibians are not. On the next page, we'll talk about that alittle bit more.

    50/80

Humans are warm-blooded animals,so are all other mammals, toacertain extent, and birds. Howeverwarm blood is not reallythequestion, many reptiles have blood

far warmer than ours, but only onhot days.

In fact, blood temperature ismerely a reflection ofbodytemperature. The important thingabout mammals and birds isthatthey maintain a constant internal temperature.

Reptiles and many other animals, particularly most insects liveat the temperature of the

world around them - cold when it is cold and hot when it ishot.

Mammals maintain their inner temperature by burning food throughdigestion and theystay cool by sweating, panting and changingpostures and place in the world. Sweating andpanting work bygenerating heat loss through evaporating water; changing postureallowsmammals to control to some extent the heat absorbed from theworld around them; whilechanging position simply means seekingshade or shelter when it is too hot.

    Being warm-bloodedgives mammals a

distinct advantage inmay habitats, allowingthem to be activewhenreptiles are hardly ableto move. It also allowsmammals to liveinhabitats where reptilescannot live at all, suchas the arctic, mountaintops, etc.

Only mammals sweat, but not all mammals

have the same number of sweat glands. For instance whileprimates have sweat glands allover their bodies, cats and dogs onlyhave then in their feet and golden moles and whalesdon't haveany.

Science Unit 3: VertebratesLesson 8: Mammal Teeth

Did you know that most of the time you can tell what a mammaleats just by lookingat his teeth? There are three main kinds ofteeth - incisors, canines, and molars.

Molars are good for grinding up plant foods - fruits andvegetables. For examplean animal that eats a lot of grass isprobably going to have a lot of molars in theirmouth. Animals thatonly eat plants are called herbivores. Herbivores are animalslikeelephants and deer and gorillas and rhinoceroses. Are you anherbivore? Doyou only eat plants? -----

Carnivores are meat eaters. Some carnivores hunt for and killother animals sothat they can eat them. Other carnivores wait untilthey find a dead creature toeat. Carnivores have LARGE incisors forcutting and LONG, SHARP canines fortearing. They don't have handsto hold their food like you and I do. All they haveis their teeth. They use those long, sharp teeth to rip the meat off ofdeadanimals. (Hey, they have to eat, right? And these kind ofanimals need to eat meatto be healthy.) Are you a carnivore? Do youeat only meat? -----

Omnivores are creatures that eat a variety of food. They eatplants foods, like

carrots and lettuce and potatoes and apples and bananas. Andthey eat animalfoods, like eggs and chicken and fish and meat.Bears are omnivores. Bears eatthings such as berries and mushroomsand salmon (fish) and deer. Omnivores needall three kinds of teethfor their diet. They have a lot of molars, but they alsohave smallincisors and canines, too. Are you an omnivore? Do you eat plantandanimal foods? -----

These five Japanese islands lay in the Ring of Fire. Look at thesmall red andyellow triangles in the map above. Everywhere you seethe triangles is a placewhere lots of earthquakes happen or wherethere are volcanoes. Most of thevolcanoes on our planet and most ofthe earthquakes that happen in the world areright there going in aline all around the Pacific Ocean, making a sort of ring aroundit. That, in fact, is why we call this the "Ring of Fire".

Can you find Japan on this map? ----- There are a lot oftriangles on Japan, aren'tthere? ----- That is because Japan has alot of earthquakes and volcanoes.

Because of this, the Japanese government has worked very hard tomake sure thatthe buildings in Japan are very strong so that theywill not collapse in an

earthquake. And the people that live in Japan are supposed tokeep emergencysupplies ready - things such as water, food, aflashlight, a radio, a first aid kit...And they are also advised tonot put heavy things up high where they might fall andhurtsomebody. Schools have evacuation drills several times a year sothatchildren and teachers will be ready for an emergency, such as abig earthquake.

"In much of Japan, the flowering cherry trees (which theJapanese call sakura)come into full bloom around the beginning ofApril. April is the month when thenew school year starts forJapanese children; it's also the month when companiesstart theirnew business years and when many new graduates start to work. Sothecherry blossoms make people think of new beginnings. When theyare in bloom, people make special visits to parks and other spotswith many cherry trees; oftenthey have picnics under the brancheswith family and friends.

"Japan has more types of cherry trees than any other country, over 200 in all. Theblossoms are pickled and used to make a hotdrink served on special occasions, andthe leaves are pickled andused as the wrapping for sweets.

"The sakura start blooming in the south at the end of March andwork their waynorth to Hokkaido in May. This helps people plantheir flower-viewing outings.
